Measures that residents can take for spill preparedness:
- Keep all chemical products in their original packaging with labels
- Fuel storage tanks should be inspected annually for signs of leaks or damage
- Above-ground tanks are safer than underground; replace any tank that is more than 30 years old
- Never dispose of chemicals or contaminated materials down a drain or in a landfill
- Dispose of hazardous materials at the Household Special Waste Depot
- Call the Ministry of the Environment's Spills Action Centre to report spills: 1-800-268-6060
