Sustainable Waste Management for Sault North
Current Members of Sault North Waste Management Council
Planning
The Sault North Waste Management Council is an incorporated non-profit organization and registered charity that was formed in 2006 to address the closure of four waste disposal sites in the area since 2000, and the predicted short lifespan of the remaining two. Council has established a goal of realizing a long-term strategy by 2009 that will guide the waste management practices for Sault North for the next 50 years.
Diversion
Sault North Waste Management Council implemented a pilot recycling program in 2007. 27% of permanent residents currently take advantage of this free service. Once a month, #1 and #2 plastic, tin and aluminum cans are collected through a curbside recycling program. Through an agreement between Council and the City of Sault Ste. Marie, Sault North residents may access the Household Special Waste Depot free of charge, to safely dispose of materials such as: paint, batteries, and motor oil.
Education
Council recognizes that Planning and Diversion will not be successful without the implementation of an Education program. Council promotes its programs through newsletters, direct mailings and attending special events in the area. A school-based education program which delivers important lessons on waste reduction and waste management has also been created.
